Vote for the best regional front page of 2019

It’s that time of the year again and our annual contest to find the best regional newspaper Front Page of the past 12 months is now under way.

Once again it’s been a year of huge national stories, notably Brexit, the General Election and the 75th anniverasary of D-Day.

But while these are reflected in our shortlist with front pages from the Manchester Evening News, The Herald and The News, Portsmouth. our list of contenders also highlights more local concerns.

These include the Dundee Evening Telegraph’s coverage of a spate of drugs deaths on its patch, and the Liverpool Echo’s exclusive about a dying man ruled fit to work by heartless benefits chiefs.

Football coverage also features strongly, with The Chronicle lamenting the departure of Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez while The Gazette cheered the demise of controversial former Blackpool FC owner Owen Oyston.

And Sheffield daily The Star’s international women’s day tribute to the women of its patch also makes our shortlist.

On a lighter note, the Leicester Mercury makes the list after debunking one of the most infamous newspaper front pages of all time by revealing that comedian Freddie Starr did not eat a hamster belonging to a local model.

And the Edinburgh Evening News earns a nomination for the launch of its anti-pothole campaign featuring a garden gnome named Potty.

Our poll is now open and will run until 9am on Monday 6 January, with the winner to be announced on the site that morning.
