UVA already nearing 40 COVID-19 cases and classes haven’t even started in-person yet

The University of Virginia released a COVID-19 dashboard website Wednesday afternoon showing a rise in cases since Aug. 18.

As of Wednesday morning, there were 37 positive cases of COVID-19 amongst faculty, staff, students and contract employees. Thirteen of those are students, the dashboard said. Five percent of student quarantine rooms were occupied as of Wednesday afternoon.

Area case update

The Virginia Department of Health reported 1,005 new coronavirus cases Wednesday, bringing the state’s total to 115,458.

There were two new congregate outbreaks in the Central Shenandoah Health District Wednesday, bringing the total number of outbreaks to 26. The CSHD reports outbreaks in the following facility types:

  • Long-term care facility — 8
  • Congregate setting — 15
  • Correctional facility — 1
  • Healthcare setting — 1
  • Educational setting — 1

There are also two new cases Augusta County. The VDH website, which may be delayed by several days in its reporting, lists the following local COVID-19 cases: 

  • Staunton — 167
  • Augusta County — 349
  • Waynesboro — 210
