Steve Sarkisian near bottom of CBS Sports’ Big 12 head coach rankings
Going into the 2021 season, Steve Sarkisian is only one of two new head coach hires in the Big 12.
After Kansas decided to fire Les Miles, former Buffalo head coach Lance Leipold was hired by the Jayhawks. Sadly being the laughing stock of the conference for years, a coach working out in Lawrence is an “I’ll believe it when I see it” type of scenario.
As for the rest of the coaches within the Big 12, all are entering at least their second season. Mike Gundy and Gary Patterson are seasoned vets, while Matt Wells is one who will be on the hot seat.
CBSSports decided to rank every coach in the Big 12 with Sarkisian toward the bottom of the list. The three immediately in front of him come as a bit of a shock, especially Leipold.

Lincoln Riley is the safe, surefire pick as the No. 1 coach in the conference. He has won four consecutive Big 12 championships and dominated nearly everyone on a yearly basis. The 2021 season will be no different, with his best team returning to Norman.
Seeing Aranda at No. 10 seems a bit harsh considering his prior success as a defensive coordinator at LSU. Leipold being at No. 5 is generous, considering he was in the MAC (one of the worst FBS conferences) and now at the worst Power Five football school in the country.
Texas and Sarkisian will have the opportunity to prove themselves throughout their first year. Any kind of success and the former Alabama offensive coordinator will find himself in the top three going into next year.
