Jaden Smith launches first vegan New Balance sneaker
The new vegan sneaker is a reflection of ‘Jaden’s passion for sustainability and progressive fashion’
Actor Jaden Smith has launched his first unisex sneaker made from vegan leather.
The 22-year-old – who is known for his efforts in environmental and social activism apart from his connection with stardom collaborated with footwear brand New Balance to create The NB for Jaden Smith Vision Racer.
The lifestyle shoe is inspired by Smith’s favourite New Balance designs namely the X-Racer and 1700.
Designed to reflect Smith’s ‘unique, bold, fashion-forward aesthetic’, the sneaker is constructed with vegan, partially recycled materials for sustainability and features a chunky thick bottom with an over-proportioned midsole made from reground EVA foam and recycled foam, castor bean oil and virgin polyurethane make up the comfy insoles.
Smith and New Balance
Smith and New Balance first partnered in 2017 and the musician is the brand’s official ambassador although this is the first product the duo have collaborated on.
Whilst working on the new sneaker, the show brand said Smith had a hands-on-approach to not only working with New Balance to create a new silhouette but learning about the footwear creation process from design and development to manufacturing and supply chain logistics.
The group said that Jaden’s passion for sustainability and progressive fashion, coupled with an appreciation for classic New Balance products led to the “vision” behind the NB for Jaden Smith Vision Racer.
“Shared values of transforming the status quo; staying true to oneself; giving back to community; and, respecting heritage while co-authoring a distinct future, are the foundation of the relationship between New Balance and Jaden Smith,” said Chris Davis, New Balance Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of Merchandising in a statement.
The Vision Racer will first launch in a Wavy Baby Blue colorway, with additional colors added throughout 2020.
The sneakers will retail for $150 and will be available for purchase on the company’s website and in select retail locations on July 24.
