‘Ice’ skating rink creating a buzz | Local News
EFFINGHAM — A classic winter pastime is coming to downtown Effingham this weekend and it doesn’t use traditional ice.
The Downtown Effingham Business Group’s Hometown Christmas will be hosting an ice skating rink in Parking Lot 7 at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and South Fourth Street.
DIY Rentals, based in Terre Haute, Indiana, spent several hours on Thursday afternoon setting up the rink and enclosure in the parking lot. Zach Kline, manager of DIY Rentals, said the 30-by-90-foot rink is made of plastic coated with a solution to make it slick like ice. He and two other men set up the rink.
According to the DIY Rentals website, EZ Glide 350 synthetic ice is used in every realm of the skating industry — recreational, hockey training, figure skating training, speed skating, curling, special events and high-end entertainment productions Even though the rink is not real ice, skaters can take to the rink using regular ice skates.
Event organizer Lori Worman said the Downtown Effingham Business Group saw the skating rink in a few other communities and talked about bringing it to Effingham. The rink has been set up in other communities such as Robinson, Newport and Bradley.
“We look at things all the time to help complete the event and add uniqueness,” she said.
Worman said since the first day the activity was posted on Facebook, the post has had over 40,000 views, been shared 500 times, had 300 likes and 200 comments.
Jann Rhodes happened to be walking by as the rink was being set up Thursday and said she was looking forward to it.
“I think it will be great,” she said. “I’m going to come skate.”
The rink will be open Friday from 5 to 9 p.m., noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The cost to skate is $5 per hour and includes skate rentals.
