Writer and photographer Sharon Niederman was driving on the road between Questa and Red River when she crossed paths with a herd of bighorn sheep on the move.
“So blessed today to see the magical, mythical, elusive bighorn sheep on the road between Questa and Red River,” Niederman posted on Facebook. “Only the second time I’ve ever seen them.”
The bighorns roam the length of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and down to the Río Grande Gorge. More than 1,500 Rocky Mountain bighorns thrive in rugged terrain from the Gila wilderness in southern New Mexico north into Colorado. An annual survey by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish helps biologists track the population.
